Matthias Müller (born June 9, 1953 in Limbach-Oberfrohna ) is a German manager . From September 2015 to April 2018, Müller was Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG , member of the Board of Management of Porsche Holding and Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Audi .

Life

In 1972, Müller finished his training as a toolmaker at Audi NSU Auto Union AG . The following year he passed his Abitur in Ingolstadt and then began studying computer science at the Munich University of Applied Sciences , which he graduated with a degree in computer science (FH) .

Act

In 1978 he returned to Audi. In 1984 he took on a management position in the IT sector. From 1993 to 1995, Müller was in charge of product management for the Audi A3 , after which he coordinated the planning of all the brand's model series.

A year after Martin Winterkorn took over the management of Audi in 2002, Müller became chief coordinator of the sporty brand group of the VW Group, which included Seat and Lamborghini in addition to Audi . When Winterkorn became head of Volkswagen AG in 2007, he took Müller with him to Wolfsburg, where he was appointed general representative. As head of VW product strategy, Müller was in charge of product management for all of the Group's brands. Then he became CEO.

Management and supervisory board activities

In July 2010, he was appointed CEO of Porsche AG with effect from October 1, 2010 . In March 2015, he was also given a seat on the board of directors of the parent company Volkswagen, with responsibility for the board of directors of Dr. Ing. H. c. F. Porsche AG .

After Martin Winterkorn resigned in September 2015 in the wake of the emissions scandal , Matthias Müller became the new CEO of Volkswagen AG on September 25, 2015. A few weeks later, he was also elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Audi AG.

In October 2017 he announced that he would bring around 80 new models with electric motors to the market with VW by 2025 .

With effect from April 30, 2018, Müller resigned from his position as Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG as well as his seat on the Board of Management of Porsche Holding.

Herbert Diess was appointed as his successor at Volkswagen AG on April 12, 2018 .

Varia

Müller's father was racing director at VEB motorcycle factory Zschopau (brand DKW - IFA , the former motorcycle factory of Auto Union  AG ) and fled the GDR in 1955 . The rest of the family left the GDR in 1956 and settled with their father in Ingolstadt , where a new Auto Union GmbH was founded in 1949 .
