Herbert Diess (born October 24, 1958 in Munich ) is a German - Austrian manager , since April 13, 2018 Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG , Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Škoda Auto , Seat and Audi and member of the Supervisory Board of Infineon and FC Bayern München AG .

Life

From 1977 to 1978 Diess studied vehicle technology at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich up to the preliminary examination . He then took a degree in general mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich , which he completed in 1983 as a graduate engineer . From 1984 to 1989 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management ( iwb ) at the Technical University of Munich, and from 1988 he was in charge of the assembly automation department at the iwb . In 1987 he was with the work computer aided development flexible automated assembly processes at the TU Munich for Doktoringenieur doctorate .

From 1989 to 1996 Diess worked at Bosch in Stuttgart . From 1990 he was Head of Planning and Maintenance at the Bosch plant in Treto, Spain (part of the Municipio Bárcena de Cicero ) and from 1993 Technical Director of the Treto plant.

In 1996 he initially headed long-term and structural planning at BMW . In 1997 he took over the management of process consulting in the Production department and in 1998 he was in charge of process consulting for development and technology. He was plant manager in Birmingham (1999–2000) and Oxford (2000–2003). In 2003 he took over the management of the BMW Motorrad division .

From 2007 to 2014 he was a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG and was responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network, and from 2012 for Development.

On December 9, 2014, it became known that Diess was moving to Volkswagen AG , who in July 2015 took over the newly created board position as Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Passenger Cars . At the same time, Klaus Fröhlich succeeded him as head of development at BMW. Diess considers in-house production , i.e. the production of components in the company's own parts factories, to be indispensable. He is also committed to the production of lithium-ion battery cells in Germany, as he considers them to be a core technology of electromobility . Diess has been promoting the development of the electric car since 2018 . He assumes (as of 2019) that around 10% (2025: 20%, 2030: 50%) electric mobility can be achieved by 2021.

Diess was appointed to the Infineon Supervisory Board in February 2015 .

On April 12, 2018, Volkswagen AG announced that Herbert Diess would succeed Matthias Müller as the new Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. On June 8, 2020, the VW Group's supervisory board announced that Diess will be relinquishing his position as VW brand boss on July 1, 2020.
