Joachim Nagel (* 31 May 1966 in Karlsruhe ) is a German economist and since 2020 member of the management of the Bank for International Settlements , after 2010-2016 Member of the Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank , and then from 2017 to 2020 board member of KfW banking group was .

Life

After graduating from high school, Joachim Nagel studied economics at the University of Karlsruhe (today Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) ). After graduating in 1991, he worked there as a research assistant at the chair of money and currency, interrupted by an activity as a consultant for economic and financial policy at the SPD party executive in Bonn from March to October 1994. Since 2003 he has been working at the headquarters of the Bundesbank in Frankfurt am Main . In 2008 he became head of the central markets department. On November 1, 2016, he started as a general representative at KfW Bankengruppe. From 2017 to 2020, Nagel was a member of the Executive Board of KfW Bankengruppe, where he was responsible for international business. At the same time he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of KfW IPEX-Bank and First Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of DEG Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft .

From 2018 to 2020 he was also a member of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Börse AG .

On November 1, 2020, Nagel became a member of the management of the Bank for International Settlements as Deputy Head of the Banking Division. On December 20, 2021, his nomination as successor to Jens Weidmann in the presidency of the Deutsche Bundesbank became known.

Joachim Nagel is married and has two children. He is a member of the SPD .
