Gerhard Sabathil
Gerhard Ernst Ottomar Sabathil (born February 11, 1954 in Pforzheim ) is a German former EU Commission official and diplomat . He currently leads the business consulting their representatives in EUTOP Brussels and Berlin .
Sabathil studied economics and history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. There he was also awarded a Dr. rer. oec. PhD. He started his career in 1982 at the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry . His career with the European Union began in 1984 as a member of the cabinet of Vice-Chairman of the Commission Karl-Heinz Narjes . This was followed uses as office manager of the Head of the Directorate General for Budget , Charge d'Affaires at the EU representation in Prague and Head of Unit for the Western Balkans in Brussels. From 2000 to 2004 Sabathil was EU Ambassador to Norway and Iceland , from 2004 to 2008 Head of the Representation of the EU Commission in Germany. He then worked in various functions at the EU Commission and in the European External Action Service in Brussels until 2015 . Most recently he was director for East Asia and the Pacific.
In a video from 2014, he made a brief statement about relations between the EU and China.
His final assignment took him to Seoul as EU ambassador .
Sabathil has been managing director of EUTOP Berlin GmbH since September 2017 and also managing director of EUTOP Brussels SPRL since October 2019.
Since January 2020, the Federal Prosecutor has been investigating Sabathil on suspicion of "secret service agent activity". Sabathil is an "informant, whistleblower and recruiter" of the Chinese foreign intelligence service.
Sabathil has both German and Hungarian citizenship.
