Martin Bachmann

Martin Bachmann (born December 19, 1964 in Stuttgart ; † August 3, 2016 in Istanbul , Turkey ) was a German building researcher .

Martin Bachmann studied architecture at the University of Karlsruhe from 1986 to 1996 and specialized early on in historical building research and building surveys . His diploma thesis with Ottokar Uhl and Martin Einsele dealt with the subject of Badische Maschinenfabrik Durlach - restructuring and conversion of the former company premises . In the same year he became a research assistant in the Collaborative Research Center 315 Conservation of Historically Significant Buildings of the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Institute for Building History in Karlsruhe. Here he received his doctorate in 2000 with a dissertation on the subject of The Karlsburg . Traces of a residential complex in the urban fabric of Durlach . Also that year, Bachmann became a consultant for building research at the German Archaeological Institute Istanbul (DAI Istanbul). There he was responsible for the documentation and scientific processing of archaeological monuments in Asia Minor , the conception and management of conservation measures, research projects on construction- historical issues in Pergamon , Eflatun Pınar and on the Karasis . Since 2003 Bachmann has held a teaching position at the University of Cottbus , where he also worked on his habilitation on the subject of building technology and building organization in Hellenistic Asia Minor . In 2004/05 he was the chair of building history at the University of Dortmund . In 2005/06 he worked again as a consultant for building research at the DAI in Istanbul, and since 2006 he has been the second director of the Istanbul department. On May 12, 2010, Bachmann was elected first chairman of the Koldewey Society .

Bachmann dealt with the building organization issues of ancient architecture, especially the function of the stonemason's mark; In Istanbul he carried out research on the history of construction and research on wooden houses on urban topographical issues. He was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute.

Bachmann died on August 3, 2016 in Istanbul as a result of a heart attack while working.
