Bernhard von der Planitz (diplomat)

Bernhard Edler von der Planitz (* 1941 in Berlin ) is a German diplomat .

Life

Born in Berlin and raised in Munich, Bernhard von der Planitz comes from an old Saxon noble family. In the 1950s he played supporting roles in two films, including the 1954 film adaptation of the novel The Flying Classroom .

After graduating from high school in 1961, he studied law at the universities of Munich and Erlangen . After passing the 2nd state examination in law, he joined the Foreign Service in 1970 and held posts in Italy , Algeria , Saudi Arabia , Tel Aviv , the USA (Washington, New York) and Finland . From 1988 to 1991 he worked as a foreign policy assistant to Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker in the office of the Federal President, from 1996 to 2000 he was chief of the protocol of the federal government with the rank of ambassador, then from 2000 to 2003 he was head of the consulate general in New York . From 2003 to 2006 he was chief of protocol of the federal government for a second time with the rank of ambassador.

He then retired. Since then he has been working as a consultant on economic, political, diplomatic and protocol issues.
