Rudolf Dreßler (born November 17, 1940 in Wuppertal ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and former diplomat . In 1982 he was Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Labor and Social Affairs and from 2000 to 2005 German Ambassador to Israel .

Life

education and profession

Dreßler's parents ran an inn in a rural district of Sprockhövel . After attending the local elementary school , he completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter , which he completed in 1958 with the journeyman's examination. Then he was retrained to become a metter and linotype setter. He then worked as a freelancer for various newspapers. From 1969 to 1981 he was chairman of the works council of the Westdeutsche Zeitung and from 1974 to 1983 a member of the main board of IG Druck und Papier .

Political party

He has been a member of the SPD since 1969. From 1984 to 2000 he was chairman of the Working Group for Employee Issues (AfA). In addition, he was chairman of the SPD in Wuppertal from 1986 to 1996. From 1984 to 2000 he was also a member of the party executive and from 1991 to 2000 the presidium of the SPD.

Dreßler is considered a classic traditional social democrat, not necessarily left-wing, but pragmatic, but staunch in representing employee interests. In an interview with Neues Deutschland in May 2007, Dreßler speculated about a move to the Left Party . The reason for this he cited was his dissatisfaction with the social policy of the SPD, which had pushed the social cut too far . In a later interview with Spiegel on October 20, 2007, however, he ruled out such a change of party.

After the negotiations for a grand coalition in February 2018, Dreßler said that the SPD leadership had surrendered to the rhetoric of the CDU and CSU. The SPD simply accepted terms such as “ subsidiary protection ”, “time limit without objective” or “upper limit”. He himself could not agree to the coalition agreement and expressed the hope that the SPD members would also reject it.

MP

Dreßler was a member of the German Bundestag from 1980 to August 31, 2000 . Since June 23, 1987 he was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and from 1987 to 1991 chairman of the social policy working group of the SPD parliamentary group. For 19 years he was also responsible for Israel policy. Dreßler was always directly elected member of the constituency of Wuppertal I , most recently he received 53.1% of the votes in the 1998 federal election .

Public offices

On the occasion of a cabinet reshuffle, Dreßler was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Labor and Social Affairs in the federal government led by Chancellor Helmut Schmidt on April 28, 1982 , but left the government on October 1, 1982 following the successful vote of no confidence in Helmut Kohl .

From September 1, 2000 to August 31, 2005 he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Israel . However, when, before taking office, he named an amicable internationalization of the city as a possible solution to the controversial status of Jerusalem , this led to a dispute in the Bundestag. The then Mayor of Jerusalem, Ehud Olmert , initially regretted Dreßler's appointment as a result of this statement. The former Israeli ambassador in Berlin, Avi Primor , also criticized Dreßler's statement, but described him as a connoisseur of Israel who was highly valued there. The irritations soon subsided and Dreßler was generally regarded as a reliable friend of Israel when he left.

Since February 2010 he has been a member of the Solidarity Modern Institute , on whose board of trustees he sits.

Private

Dreßler is married and has two children. On November 11, 1997, he was seriously injured in a car accident near Bonn.
