The Gertelbach rises in a spring horizon between the lower Buntsandstein and the Bühlertal granite west of the Black Forest High Road and flows into the (smaller) Wiedenbach after only 2.5 km. The stream overcomes about 330 meters in altitude. In the steepest section, about 800 m before the mouth, the stream cascades down 220 meters in about 15 steps from 2 to 6 meters high. The escarpment was probably formed together with the basin-like shape of the valley below it during phases of the strongest glaciation of older ice ages . The individual cascades, on the other hand, can be traced back to the fissure network in the Bühlertal granite. The blocks show the typical treasure trove of wool sack weathering . Some cascades were created on the rounded granite blocks collected in the valley floor. They slid down the slope in the almost vegetation-free ice age phases.

The gorge forest along the Gertelbachs is marked by white fir , spruce , beech trees , sycamore and ash . He is from a selection forest emerged, mixed at the unterschiedlichster very small space and trees dimensions are present, and when Schonwald protected. Plants grow along the natural mountain stream that benefit from the high humidity and cool temperatures in the gorge, e.g. B. worm fern , rib fern and potted fern .

The Gertelbach was used for log rafting until the middle of the 19th century . For this purpose, the water above the Schwellmanns Bridge was artificially dammed (so-called surge ) and drained in a surge in order to flood the firewood into the valley, where it was fished out of the water and sold at the so-called "wood catcher" in today's Bühler Stadtgarten .

The falls, formerly known as Gertelbach Gorge , were a prominent tourist destination early on, and more so than they are today, because of their proximity to Baden-Baden . Today's hiking trail was laid out in 1889 by the Bühl Improvement Association and the Baden Forestry Administration, creating a large number of paths and steps carved into the rock. Before the renovation, he first crossed the falls at almost every scenic climax and thus visually hogged them. At the earlier hotel near the confluence with the Wiedenbach there is a resting place with an arbor between granite blocks near the creek, also below the main falls.

Even today, a hike through the picturesque torrent scenery is a special experience. Gertelbach- and Wiedenbachtal are also surrounded by an ensemble of towering granite cliffs with extensive fissures, which are known as climbing areas.
