action

In 1934, after the death of her father, the decent and uptight housewife Madeleine invites her headstrong sister Dinah to join her and her husband Rickie in their elegant London home. The couple have a son named Anthony. Madeleine has always been jealous of Dinah, an unconventional painter who often causes despair in her conservative sister and mother. Madeleine finally tries to betroth Dinah to a handsome man. Dinah then announces her engagement at a family dinner. But later that evening she is asked by Rickie, who has had feelings for Dinah for a long time, to end the engagement. Over time, the two start an affair. Even when Dinah becomes pregnant, they prefer to let his marriage go on. Rickie lives his life with Madeleine as before, while Dinah and her friend Bridie are expecting the baby.

After the baby is stillborn, Dinah turns away from Rickie and ends the affair. This triggers desperation in Rickie, which he tries to hide from Madeleine. Months later, however, she receives a letter from Bridie, in which she tells her about the affair and gives her an insight into the incidents. Rickie doesn't give in after the affair ends. Ultimately, Dinah comes back into his life and he tells Madeleine that he is leaving her. Things take a bad turn, however, when Rickie collapses and is taken to the hospital while Dinah waits ignorantly for him at home. Dinah is later prevented from seeing him again by her mother and sister, who tell her that he has decided to return to his family. Rickie, however, they say that Dinah left him.

The lovers only meet again after a few months when Dinah leaves the apartment that Rickie has financed. He notices that she has been there the whole time and hasn't left. Dinah, however, is too hurt to continue the affair after everything that has happened, so the two separate one last time. The film ends with a reconciliation between Dinah and Madeleine and how both learn to forgive each other.
