Christian Wirth (biologist)

Christian Wirth (born February 28, 1969 ) is a German biologist, professor of functional botany at the University of Leipzig and managing director of iDiv .

Life

Wirth completed his community service with the Biological Protection Association Hunte-Weser-Ems in Wardenburg and then studied biology in Bayreuth . From 1998 to 2000 he did his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena . This was followed by research and postdoc stays at Princeton University , the Sukachev Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Krasnoyarsk and at the Institute of Arctic Biology, University of Alaska Fairbanks . Since October 2009 he has been the head of the Working Group Special Botany and Functional Biodiversity at the University of Leipzig.

His research focuses on biodiversity and ecosystem functions, especially the functional diversity of forest trees and forests, the connection between population ecology and biogeochemistry , fault ecology, destructors , allometry and allocation and the diversification of earth system models.

Wirth is involved in projects such as FunDivEurpe , carbon sequestration in urban trees, diversity-functional relationships in grassland - Jena Experiment (funded by the DFG ), biodiversity and ecosystem functions in subtropical forests in China - BEF China (DFG), forest diversity and carbon dynamics - biodiversity exploratories (DFG) and Functional Ecology of Trees (TRY) - a global database of functional plant traits. He is the contact person for the DFG research center German Center of Integrative Biodiversity Research .
