occupation

Much Ado About Nothing is a film adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing from 2012. The black and white film was shot in just 12 days in the private home of director Joss Whedon . The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival . It was first seen in Germany on June 29, 2013 during the Munich Film Festival .

action

Apart from a few cuts, the plot and dialogues of the film have largely been adopted unchanged from William Shakespeare's original, but there are some deviations:

For one thing, the film is set in modern times, and while the character Conrade is male in the original, in the film she is a woman who has a relationship with don Juan. Furthermore, some scenes of the chambermaid Margaret were transferred to the valet Ursula and several secondary characters - including Leonato's brother Antonio - were replaced by an advisor to Leonato. In addition, the film highlights an interpretation of the text through flashbacks , according to which Beatrice and Benedikt had a one-night stand in the past. This interpretation refers to the first scene of the second act in Shakespeare's original, in which Beatrice replies to the accusation that she lost Benedict's heart:

“It is true, my lord, he gave it to me for a while, and I gave him his interest for it, a double heart for a simple one. Since then he had taken it from me with the wrong dice, so that Your Grace may well say that I have lost it. "

- William Shakespeare (translated by Wolf Heinrich Graf von Baudissin ) : Much Ado About Nothing , Act 2, Scene 1

These lines should be understood in such a way that Beatrice and Benedikt already had feelings for each other, which means that the film is not about a new love, but about an old one that is rekindled.

occupation

The idea for the film came about during a private Shakespeare reading that Whedon regularly holds with actor friends he knows from his various projects. As a result, the two most important roles, Beatrice and Benedikt, are cast with Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof, who were already seen in Whedon's series Angel and who had already taken on the roles in these readings. Most of the other actors also had leading roles in his series. Reed Diamond and Fran Kranz played in Dollhouse , Sean Maher and Nathan Fillion in Firefly and Tom Lenk in Buffy - The Vampire Slayer . Originally, Anthony Head was intended for the role of Leonato, who also played a leading role in Buffy. However, since this was not available due to other obligations, the role was instead given to Clark Gregg, who previously appeared in Whedon's film Marvel's The Avengers . Also Jillian Morgese that the role of hero for the first time had a larger role in a feature film, Whedon met on the set of The Avengers know where she worked as an extra.

production

Cast and baton at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival

The film was produced by the film studio Bellwether Pictures , which Whedon founded together with his wife Kai Cole. Filming began in mid-October 2011 and took place in Joss Whedon's private home. The black and white film was made in just 12 days and on a very low budget while Whedon was on vacation from post-production of Marvel's The Avengers .

Whedon and cameraman Jay Hunter made it a priority to use natural sunlight as a light source as much as possible, and adapted the shooting to the position of the sun. Regarding the frequent use of mirrors, glass and windows that were filmed through, Whedon explains: "[It's] something I'd like to do all the time, but particularly in a movie that's all about lies, and manipulation and misunderstandings." (For example: "[This is] something I like to use in general, but especially in a film that is very much about lies, manipulation and misunderstandings"). The film was shot with several handheld cameras, but in many scenes only the main camera (a RED Epic ) was used. A Lensbaby lens was used to highlight the flashbacks .

music

The score was produced by Deborah Lurie and composed by Joss Whedon himself because of the small budget. Whedon also composed melodies for the two songs "Sigh No More" and "Heavily", which Shakespeare himself wrote for his piece. The two songs were sung by Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon . Joss Whedon described the experience of composing a film score for the first time as "scary," which, for him, meant having fun. The soundtrack was released on June 6, 2013 under the name Much Ado About Nothing: Original Score on the Bellwether Records label .

publication

The world premiere of the film was at the Toronto International Film Festival 2012. The film was later shown at festivals in other countries. After Lionsgate acquired the North American distribution rights , the film was shown in North American cinemas on June 7, 2013. Also in the UK and Australia was Much Ado About Nothing to see in the cinema. Much Ado About Nothing has been available on Blu-ray Disc and DVD since October 8, 2013 . The film was shown in Germany from July 24, 2014.

reception

Much ado about nothing was received positively by the critics , according to the film review site Rotten Tomatoes . Of the 153 reviews recorded, 84% were positive. The German film and media rating awarded the film the rating “particularly valuable”.

The Hollywood Reporter's John Defore noted in a positive review, "... stronger than most [Shakespeare] adaptations, this film remains true to Shakespeare's practice of using whatever means available to entertain the audience." Peter Travers writes for Rolling Stone magazine : "Without sparing tragically to substantiate the narrative, Whedon succeeds in an irresistible amalgamation of cheerfulness and malice". While Catherine Shoard from the Guardian calls the film "The first great contemporary Shakespeare adaptation since Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet ", Peter Bradshaw , also from the Guardian, complains that he does not have the same energy as Baz Luhrmann's film. He is also of the opinion that the history of Benedict and Beatrice - supplemented by Whedon - misrepresents their relationship.
