Powder Girl (original title: Chalet Girl ) is a British romantic comedy directed by Phil Traill from 2011 .

action

Kim loves skateboarding. She is known as a skateboard prodigy and wins a U-16 competition at the age of 11. Even so, her parents come from very humble backgrounds, they support Kim with full enthusiasm and come to all of her competitions. This also applies to the London Trials, a skateboarding competition in which Kim took first place. On the drive home from the competition, the car is exuberant. The family celebrates Kim's victory when the father who drives the car suddenly has to evade. The car is thrown onto the guardrail. Kim's mother has to pay for the accident with her life. The remaining, torn family finds it difficult to deal with death. William, Kim's father, is truly neglected in his small apartment. Kim gives up skateboarding and instead starts to work in a fast food restaurant under low circumstances. In addition, she does the entire household, takes care of the finances and cooks for herself and her father.

When her colleague tells her about a job in a fancy chalet, Kim becomes curious. She applies to an agency that mediates so-called "chalet girls" and takes courses to learn the basics of fine service, etc. First she received a rejection, because her unruly, down-to-earth character doesn't really seem to fit into the world of the rich and beautiful. But when every family in Austria is urgently looking for a chalet girl and everyone is already occupying other positions, the agency manager feels compelled to offer Kim the job. She refuses at first because she would have to go to Austria for 4 months for the job and thinks that her father would not be able to cope on his own. Finally she decides to go and takes the night train to the exclusive ski resort of St. Anton .

Where her colleague Georgie is waiting for her. Georgie does not understand what an ordinary-looking British woman who has never seen mountains has done in her world, which is why she makes her settling-in phase relatively difficult for Kim.

Shortly after Kim's arrival, the rich Madsen family, consisting of the snuggly and somewhat suspicious Caroline and her quieter husband Richard, their sons Jonny and Nigel and Jonny's friend Chloe, reached the ski resort.

Kim is frightened by the sublime demeanor of the apparently perfect family, but already realizes on the first evening that the owners of the chalet can do very different things. Like an average family, they sit together, tell jokes and play funny games. Georgie also seems to be part of the family.

The next morning the family leaves the chalet early to go skiing. Kim doesn't know what to do with her time, which is why she digs an old snowboard from the Madsen family. After many unsuccessful attempts to teach himself to snowboard, the Finn Mikki finally becomes aware of Kim. He explains to her how to shift her weight to keep from falling over. Lo and behold: Kim turns out to be a child prodigy. Soon she will be flying down the slopes with Mikki. As the two of them take the lift up the slope again, Mikki tells Kim why he is here: Because of a snowboard freestyle competition, which he finally wants to win this year. So far he has crashed on the last jump every time he tried, this year it should be different. He advises Kim to take part too, after which the competition, which takes place 3 months later, becomes the goal of the whole film.

The evening before you leave is very important for the family, which is why everyone is dressing up. Caroline is annoyed about the appearance of Kim, whereupon Richard coaxes her well and Georgie helps her to dress up. Jonny likes the changed look of Kim, and the chemistry between the two seems to harmonize well. Time and again, Jonny protects Kim from condescending attacks, from his mother, other girls or sexist, rich men.

The next day the family leaves the chalet and Kim has time to train with Mikki again. During one of her training sessions, she meets Tara, a true snowboard legend who broke her back in a competition. She can only snowboard under the influence of strong painkillers, but is planning the upcoming freestyle competition as her comeback. Tara advises Kim to borrow professional skateboarding equipment from Willy, which she eventually does.

Later that day, Georgie reads one of Kim's messages and learns that it is her birthday that day. She persuades Kim to go party with her. Due to excessive alcohol consumption, the two chalet girls move the party to the chalet, where it finally escalates. Mikki, who seems to be interested in Georgie, Georgie, who also makes advances to Mikki, Georgie's friend and Kim go swimming naked in the pool. Just as Kim is getting out of the pool, she is lit by spotlights. Because of the fresh snow, Jonny, Chloe and Nigel come back to the chalet earlier than planned and burst into the party.

Jonny promises not to tell his parents, but Georgie and Kim have to pay for the system, which broke down, and remove all traces of the party night.

The next day, Mikki, Nigel, who is also interested in Georgie, Jonny, Chloe, Georgie and Kim hit the slopes together. Jonny and Kim playfully try to outdo each other again and again, which ends with Jonny showing off a jump. After some hesitation, Kim also wants to risk a jump, but then slows down when she sees her mother and the car accident before her mental accident. She falls, but nothing happens. At Jonny's concern, Chloe is seized by jealousy. She wants to get Jonny's attention by jumping too. She falls badly and is picked up by mountain rescue. Jonny, Nigel and Chloe break off their short vacation to return to London.

Kim asks Mikki to teach her to jump, which he likes to do. When she finally dares to jump at the exercise opportunity, she becomes cocky. Although Mikki tells her it is still too early, she tries a jump, but breaks off again because of her vision. She falls and bruises her arm.

She is depressed. Likewise Georgie, who is ignored by Mikki, because she threw herself at Nigel because of his huge amount of money. Mikki encourages Kim, which gives her new courage. He ignores Georgie.

Soon afterwards, however, Nigel, Jonny and Richard arrive again in St. Anton. But she is not alone. There are important businessmen. When Richard, Nigel, Jonny and the men go up the mountain to do their business and go skiing on the side, they need a service person with them. So Kim flies in the helicopter and is completely fascinated by the view that is offered to her. Jonny is also completely fascinated, but by Kim.

When the men want to leave again, Jonny decides that he'll stay in the chalet. He asks Kim to learn snowboarding for him, so she can win back the money that was spent on the broken system. Kim agrees to the deal and gives Jonny snowboard lessons. In the next few days, strong feelings develop or solidify on both sides while romping around in the snow. After all, it comes to sex.

The next day, Jonny and Kim come down dressed in towels and talk lively when Jonny suddenly freezes. His mother and girlfriend are standing in the doorway, both looking at him in shock. Caroline tells Kim that Jonny and Chloe are getting engaged, whereupon she feels betrayed and wants to go back to England.

Shortly before she takes the train back home, she calls her father to inform him of her early return. Her father says her mother wanted Kim to take part in the competition and she shouldn't throw away all the work now. Kim changes her mind and now decides to take part in the competition.

As in previous years, Mikki falls again on the last jump, but takes it very positively and does not lose the courage to make it next time. Tara, who had Willy (legal) inject painkillers before her run, delivered a great performance and took first place. Kim is also enthusiastic about her performance, but brakes again before the last jump and finishes the slope without jumping. Even though she lacks the number of points from the important last jump, she is in 21st place. The first 20 placed snowboarders qualify for the final, so if someone fails, Kim can move up to the final.

Kim was overcome with frustration again. Again, she didn't make the jump. The night before the final, which she and Georgie, who has reconciled with Mikki, spend at Mikki's, she sneaks out of the apartment to hike up the mountain.

Even before the film, Jonny Kim tells about the so-called "Yeti", a snowboarder who climbs the slope at night to be the first to leave his mark in the fresh snow. Once at the top, Kim finally meets Willy, who turns out to be the "Yeti". She now confides her story to him and tells about her mother and the car accident. Together, the two finally drive down the slope.

Jonny and Chloe's engagement party is about to take place, but Jonny has noticed that he doesn't love Chloe at all and is only with her for the sake of his mother. At the party he wants to gently teach her that he can't get engaged to her, whereupon Chloe makes him a dramatic scene. His father stands by Jonny and leaves the party with him as inconspicuously as possible.

Even though she is only 21st, Kim reaches the competition arial full of motivation. She doesn't give up hope that she can drive after all. Hope fades, however, when 19 of the 20 drivers have already run their course. The only female boarder who is still in line is Tara. Kim wishes her good luck and turns to go. Willy then talks to Tara with the painkiller in hand. He tells her that with her run in qualification she has already proven everything she wanted to prove. Tara then gives Kim her starting jersey and wishes her good luck.

Shortly before she starts, Kim calls her father and tells him which channel he can watch her on. She doesn't have more time either, she has to start. Kim presented a breathtaking run when she approached the hill for the last jump, she saw her mother cheering for her. She masters the jump brilliantly and wins first place.

Below you congratulate Mikki, who is already in plaster, and Georgie, who after a few teething problems has become her friend. Nigel wants to propose to Georgie, whereupon Mikki and Georgie kiss. Nigel doesn't seem to mind that much, instead he asks Georgie's girlfriend out on a date, who gladly accepts the invitation. Finally Jonny approaches Kim. He apologizes, but Kim has long since forgiven him. They kiss in front of the camera, whereupon their father and old friends start cheering in front of the television. Caroline, who followed the race on television with Richard, is also understanding and seems to have accepted her son's choice.

criticism

"Felicity Jones' enchanting one-girl show and a lively production save Phil Traill's unoriginal comedy into the midfield of the genre, despite all the cliché ballast."

- Filmstarts.de

"Trivial climber fairy tale based on a tried and tested pattern, which improves its predictability and its only little interesting characters with some fast-paced winter sports images."

“Director Phil Traill has already proven his lack of talent for comedy with works like 'Crazy About Steve'. Here, too, he messes up almost every gag, gets lost in silly things and doesn't tell anything really new with this Cinderella variant. "
