history

Old Galzigbahn with a view of St. Anton

The first Galzigbahn opened on December 19, 1937; it was the first mountain railway on the Arlberg . Rudolf Gomperz , who was deported in 1942 and murdered in the Maly concentration camp, is regarded as a pioneer, advocate and visionary for the construction of the Galzigbahn . The cable car ran from the valley station at 1304  m to the Galzig at 2080  m and was mainly used for winter operations. At that time, the railway had a transport capacity of 120 people per hour. The two cabins each fit around 30 people. In the first year, the Galzigbahn carried 60,000 people. The construction of the Galzigbahn was followed by the establishment of the Arlberger Bergbahnen AG , which today operate the Arlberg ski area.

The last rebuilding and renovation of the old railway took place in 1964. After that, the Galzigbahn had a capacity of 700 people per hour. But this became too little over time and larger queues regularly formed. In 1990 the nearby Gampenbahn was converted from a two- seater chairlift into a modern four-seater chairlift with a weather protection cover . But even this increase in the delivery rate was less and less able to cope with the strong influx of winter sports enthusiasts and longer queues formed.

New building in 2006

A cabin is brought up one floor by means of a ferris wheel

Since many railways on the Arlberg are modern cable cars with partially built-in heated seats, the logical step was to demolish and rebuild the Galzigbahn. The new lift opened on December 9, 2006.

The new Galzigbahn uses the Funitel system, in which the cabins are connected to two parallel ropes. The Funitel system was combined with a world first in ropeway construction. After they have entered the valley station, the cabins are placed on two “giant wheels” and lowered about 8 m, so that passengers can get on and off at ground level. Then the cabins are raised again, accelerated and clamped onto the ropes.

The new lift has 28 cabins, each of which can transport 24 people, 12 of them seated and 12 standing. The speed has been tripled to 6 m / s compared to the old runway. The architect of the valley station is Georg Driendl. The building has a glass facade and the entire railway technology is visible. The building is effectively illuminated at night.

In the mountain station of the Galzigbahn there are several restaurants and a ski shop. In addition, the valley station of Vallugabahn I is integrated into the building complex.
