Mothers & Sons (Original title: Some Mother's Son ), for a while also marketed under the vicious circle of violence , is an Irish film from 1996 with Helen Mirren in the leading role. Directed by filmmaker Terry George and co- wrote the script with Jim Sheridan . The film is based on a true story.

The focal point of the film is a hunger strike in 1981 , which took place in Maze Prison in Northern Ireland. The IRA -Gefangene Bobby Sands enters a hunger strike to his protest against the treatment of IRA prisoners to make known. He believes that prisoners should be treated as prisoners of war and not as criminals.

action

Two IRA activists Gerard Quigley and Frank Higgins are arrested after a bomb attack on a military transporter. In prison, they meet Bobby Sands. Sands has almost earned the reputation of a fighter legend through his activities. Quigley and Higgins can hardly avoid the aura of Sands and are fascinated by his stories. All three think more and more of entering the history of the underground movement as martyrs . Due to the poor conditions of detention, they demand that they should be treated as prisoners of war and not as criminals. When the British government refuses, they later go on hunger strike along with other prisoners in order to back up their demands.

As the health of the men in prison continues to deteriorate and the resulting confrontation between the IRA and the British government escalates, Gerard and Frank's mothers fight for their sons' lives by all possible means. But even interventions from political circles cannot improve the situation. When Bobby Sands dies after 66 days, Kathleen Quigley first doubts whether the political goals are worth the many human sacrifices. When she receives the news of Frank Higgins death, these doubts become a certainty.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : A hauntingly played and carefully staged plea for life and against political obstinacy, which clearly identifies the balance of power and expresses sympathy for the political goals of the IRA.
  • Cinema 02/1997: Moving political drama in the tradition of " In the name of the father ": Helen Mirren as the mother of an IRA prisoner plays great as always.

Awards

Mothers & Sons received the Audience Award and the Youth Jury Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 1996. In the same year he was also honored with other prizes at the European Film Awards and the Angers European First Film Festival.
