action

Advertising executive Jason and nonprofit investment advisor Julie are long-time best friends in their mid-30s, but in no relationship. They live in apartments in the same building in Manhattan. You are friends with two childless married couples, the quiet couple Alex and Leslie and the sex-obsessed married couple Ben and Missy. After these two childless couples had children over the next four years, their marriages became troubled. Jason and Julie still decide to have a child together, even though they have never developed romantic feelings for each other, and then continue to date other people in order to find their dream partner. Although their friends prophesied it would end in disaster, Jason and Julie are getting on far better in their new relationship with Baby Joe than their friends expected.

Jason and Julie start going out again. Jason meets with young actress Mary Jane and Julie with divorced father Kurt. While on a couples winter vacation in Vermont, Ben questions the parental qualifications of Jason and Julie. In the following argument, Ben criticizes their agreement as untenable in the long term and humiliates Missy. Defending his decision to have a child with Julie, Jason says that he loves her very much and that she was the best choice for him to raise a family. Upon their return from Vermont, Ben and Missy separate and later divorce.

About 18 months after Joe was born, Jason is surprised at Julie's birthday dinner that she only invited him. Julie tells him that Kurt wants her to meet his kids this weekend, but that this new level of commitment has made it clear to her that she is in love with Jason, who has become her closest family with Joe. The stunned Jason tells Julie that his love for her was never emotional and that he asked Mary Jane to move in with him. Julie leaves the restaurant with a broken heart. She is soon moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn to create some distance between herself and Jason. A few months later, Jason and Mary Jane split up due to their different attitudes towards children. A few months later, at a bar with Ben, Jason admits that he has feelings for Julie, but that the nature of their breakup makes it impossible for him to respond to such feelings. Ben disagrees, pointing out the differences between his and Missy's sexual attraction relationship and Jason and Julie's longstanding friendship.

After dropping two and a half year old Joe off at Julie's, Jason gives her a present just before her next birthday. Jason's emotional change and words make Julie uncomfortable, so she sends him home. He leaves, but quickly returns and tells her that what he said to her a year ago was all wrong. He finally realized that she was the love of his life. She tells him that she can't be with someone who doesn't like her and he offers her to have sex with her after a passionate kiss to prove that he is in love with her in every way. She accepts his offer, kisses him back passionately and they both fall on her bed.

Reviews

"Takes time to find his groove, but grabs both heart and humor."

"A relationship box film of the stressedly relaxed kind, in which sympathetic people in their early 30s toss the balls in pointed dialogues and look for new, more or less unworldly concepts of life."
