The Moon Song is a song by Yeah-Yeah-Yeahs singer Karen O (Karen Orzolek). It was released as a single with three versions of the piece. Stylistically, it can be assigned to indie folk . It was written for the film Her in collaboration with director Spike Jonze .

History of origin

Karen O wrote the song at her kitchen table shortly after reading the script for the film Her . Spike Jonze was also involved in the songwriting . The two had already worked together on the soundtrack for Where the Wild Things Are (2009). The version in the film was sung by the actors Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson , whose characters Theodore and Samantha in the film “compose” the song on a ukulele .

Karen O herself recorded another solo version of the song, which was used in the credits of the film. There is also a duet version by Karen O together with Ezra Koenig , the singer of Vampire Weekend . All three versions were released on February 11, 2014 as extended play by the independent label WaterTower Music exclusively via iTunes .

Oscar nomination

In January 2014 it was announced that the song was nominated for an Oscar , along with Let It Go from Frozen , Happy from Despicable Me 2 , Ordinary Love from Mandela - The Long Road to Freedom and Alone Yet Not Alone from the film of the same name. The latter was later disqualified. Karen O and Ezra Koenig performed the song together at the 2014 Academy Awards . However, the Oscar went to Let It Go .
