action

Nelson Mandela, a South African lawyer, joins the African National Congress in 1940 . The law has become useless for black people. These suffer from the apartheid system and the tyranny that goes with it. Already during his law studies Mandela showed great interest in politics. At a rally in Sharpeville in 1960, numerous unarmed demonstrators were killed by white law enforcement officers (see Sharpeville massacre ). When Mandela found out about this, he sat at the head of the armed department of the National Congress and tried to defeat the regime with non-combative acts by burning her identity cards. The ruling regime is looking specifically for him. In July 1964 he was finally arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island . But even in prison, nothing prevents him from continuing his fight against apartheid. His wife Winnie supports him. However, she did not see her husband for several years. In prison, Mandela learns of the death of his firstborn son Thembekile and of the imprisonment of his wife Winnie. His first-born daughter, with Winnie, Zenanini is increasingly campaigning for her father politically. Nelson and Winnie initially continue their fight after Mandela is released after more than 25 years in prison. But eventually the separation follows, as Winnie turns more to violence against the regime. With the help of Frederik Willem de Klerk , the riots on the streets are suppressed and Mandela is celebrated as the first black president of South Africa.

“Director Justin Chadwick does a great job. [...] It is a wannabe epic with the aesthetics of a coffee table book. "

- Andreas Scheiner, Zeit Online
