Nomfusi (* 1988 in KwaZhakele, Port Elizabeth ; full name: Nomfusi Gotyana ) is a South African singer.

Life

Nomfusi grew up with her single mother Kwazibani with two older siblings in the township of KwaZhakele near Port Elizabeth. Her mother worked as a domestic servant and as a sangoma , her father was serving a long prison term. When Nomfusi was twelve years old, her mother died of AIDS . She moved to live with her aunt, who also died of AIDS three years later, and from there via detours to Cape Town , where she trained as an accountant . She was discovered in 2007 while singing on the stage of a restaurant where she was also a waiter. From 2008 she performed with the backing band Lucky Charms . In 2009 she signed a recording deal.

From 2012 to 2015 Nomfusi performed alongside Nneka and Roger Rekless at the Munich Music for Goals benefit concerts. She has also given numerous other concerts in Europe, for example at the WOMAD Festival and the FMM Festival das Musicas do Mundo , as well as in North America and has performed with Angélique Kidjo and Hugh Masekela , among others . In 2013 she played the role of singer Miriam Makeba in the film Mandela - The Long Road to Freedom . Before that, she had dedicated the song Iqalapha (roughly: “This is where it begins”) from her debut album Kwazibani to Mandela .

In 2014 Nomfusi went on a tour of Germany and made other appearances in Europe. In 2017 her third studio album, African Day , was released, her first work mainly recorded in English. The record was released after the separation from Universal Music on the indie label Delicious Tunes . The studio recordings of the album were documented in the Welt der Wunder format Go Get'Em .

style

Nomfusi's music, often referred to as "Afro-Soul", contains elements of Motown music and South African jazz of the 1950s. She sang mostly on isiXhosa , from her album African Day increasingly in English.

Awards

Nomfusi received the South African Fleur du Cap Award in 2010 . She was nominated twice for the South African Music Award : 2011 for the best music video and 2012 for the album Take Me Home in the category Best Adult African.
