Atandwa Duduza Yiduthi Kani (born June 6, 1984 in Port Elizabeth ) is a South African actor .

Life

Atandwa Kani was born in the city of Port Elizabeth . At a young age he came into contact with acting through his father, the actor John Kani . He often accompanied him to theater performances. After school he attended the University of Witwatersrand , from which he graduated in 2008 with a degree in theater. Most recently he studied at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York City, from which he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts .

At the beginning of his career he first appeared in stage productions. He became famous for his role in Shakespeare's The Tempest , which was produced by a collaboration between the Baxter Theater Center from Cape Town and the Royal Shakespeare Company . He appeared next to theater greats like Antony Sher and his father. He received a lot of critical praise for his performance and was awarded the Naledi Award, among other things.

Since 2007 Kani has also appeared in film and television. First he took on the role of Tumelo in the series Life is Wild . This was followed by a role in Wildes Herz Afrika , before he portrayed the folk hero in his time as a teenager in Mandela - The Long Path to Freedom in 2013 . In 2014 Kani joined the renowned Fortune Cookie Theater Company . The troupe performed in New York City and toured South Africa from 2015 to 2016, performing the piece Sizwe Banzi Is Dead , which Kani's father co-wrote for the world premiere in 1972.

In the spring of 2018, he appeared in the role of King T'Chaka in the form of a flashback in the Marvel superhero film Black Panther . As in The First Avenger: Civil War , his father played in the present.

Kani lived in Johannesburg for a while before moving to New York City to study. From 2012 to 2015 he was his first marriage to the presenter Thembisa Mdoda. In 2016 he married the musician Fikile Mthwalo. The marriage lasted until 2019.
