Fana Mokoena

Lehlohonolo Goodwill "Fana" Mokoena (born May 13, 1971 in Kroonstad , Orange Free State ) is a South African actor and politician for the Economic Freedom Fighters . He has been a member of the National Assembly for the party since 2016 .

life and career

Fana Mokoena comes from Kroonstad in central South Africa. He has been an actor since 1993 when he appeared in the South African series Generations . In 1997 he played a small role in the thriller Dangerous Ground . In 2004 he played the Rwandan general Augustin Bizimungu in the film Hotel Rwanda . In 2006 he took on the role of Jaws Bengu in the South African series The Lab , which he played until 2009. In 2008 he appeared in the series Silent Witness in a small role. In 2010 he played the role of Capt. James Sikobi in the South African drama A Small Town Called Descent . In 2011 he appeared in the action biography film adaptation Machine Gun Preacher in the role of John Garang .

In 2012 he played a small role in the thriller Safe House . 2013 appeared on the side of Brad Pitt in the role of Thierry Umutoni in the movie World War Z on. He also played the anti-apartheid fighter Govan Mbeki in the film Mandela - The Long Road to Freedom . He was then to take on the role of the scientist Romilly in Christopher Nolan's 2014 film Interstellar , which he had to decline due to his work in politics. The role was eventually cast with David Gyasi .

politics

Mokoena was initially a member of the African National Congress party , which he left because he believed it was corrupt. He then became a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters , of which he now holds the position of an additional member , ie a position in the President's Cabinet (for example: "Cabinet of the [party] president"). From 2014 to 2016 he was a member of the National Council of Provinces , one of the two chambers in the South African legislative system. From 2016 he was a member of the second chamber of parliament, the National Assembly, as a member of the Limpopo Province . After the parliamentary elections in 2019 , he moved back into parliament, with the Economic Freedom Fighters almost doubling their number of seats.
