Earthlings (German " Erdlinge ") is a documentary produced by Shaun Monson , who also wrote and directed the script . Earthlings was co-produced by Persia White . The narrator for the film is Hollywood actor and animal rights advocate Joaquin Phoenix . Moby made a large part of the soundtrack . On August 12, 2015, the sequel Unity was released.

Summary

Earthlings is a documentary about the consumption of meat and the keeping of animals. The animals serve, among other things, as suppliers of raw materials for clothing, entertainment and as test objects in animal experiments .

With a consideration of animal breeding , animal shelters and factory farming , the leather and fur trade, the sports and entertainment industry as well as medical and scientific use, Earthlings wants to show the daily misery of animals using hidden cameras and secretly made images. In the documentation, this is attributed to the greed for profit of industries that market animal products and are economically dependent on the use of animals. It is also expressly mentioned that, according to the authors, the comparison of factory farming with the Holocaust is legitimate.

production

Earthlings took five years to produce . What began as a series of public announcements regarding the sterilization and castration of pets has grown into a film that explores many aspects related to animals. Writer and director Shaun Monson began shooting at animal shelters in South Central , Long Beach, and North Hollywood . The related filming was completed quickly. Monson began to be interested in the problems of the food industry and laboratory animal practice. During this time he got access to footage from various animal welfare organizations and began editing the film. Gradually, recordings were made by speaker Joaquin Phoenix and the soundtrack was created. In addition to the music provided by Moby, parts of the soundtrack were partly composed especially for this film.

Earthlings premiered in 2005 at the Artivist Film Festival, where the film was recognized as Best Documentary, followed by a screening at the Boston International Film Festival, where it received the Award for Best Content. Earthlings was also named Best Documentary at the San Diego Film Festival. Joaquin Phoenix received the Humanitarian Award for his work in this film.

On November 4, 2005, Earthlings was released on DVD in NTSC format in English.

Phoenix commented on this documentation as follows:

“Of all the films I have ever made, this is the one that gets people talking the most. For every one person who sees Earthlings, they will tell three. "

“Of all the films I've been in, this is the most talked about. Every person who has seen Earthlings will tell three other people about it. "

criticism

Felix Laurenz criticizes the documentary film in the magazine Der Westen because of its undifferentiated, sometimes shocking approach to the topic and the very inappropriate Holocaust comparisons. As a result, the important question of power posed (“Can we humans use animals for meat, clothing and entertainment (in zoos, for example) just because we have more power than they?”) Takes a back seat. The film does not serve as an “educational film about animal husbandry”, but is merely “a source of self-affirmation for vegans”.
