Earthling

The term Earthling refers to a being of earthly or near-earth origin, mostly from planet earth . The term was coined by science fiction authors to describe a disparaging tone, which extraterrestrial beings sometimes use ostensibly towards inhabitants of the earth or with regard to people in general. The word ending “-ling”, as for example also in “Däumling”, mostly implies the immaturity of the designated being.

Either by aliens in science fiction or by nerds or geeks for every being living on earth. An example of the latter is in the novel Freak by Rodman Philbrick find. The expression also appears in the press with an ironic and funny undertone.
