Lonesome Jim is a US tragicomedy of Steve Buscemi from the year 2005 .

action

Jim is trying to build a writing career in New York City . He makes a living from walking dogs and from a part-time job at Applebee's. After the unsuccessful endeavors become apparent, he returns to his family in Indiana . His mother Sally welcomes him warmly, his father Donald and his brother Tim are disappointed.

Jim meets the single nurse Anika in a bar; they have a one-night stand that same evening. Jim is unwilling to enter into a relationship with the woman.

In a conversation, Jim tells his brother that he is just as much a loser and tragic hero as he is because he has not achieved anything that he once wanted. He unintentionally drives him to attempt suicide. When Tim is in a coma, Jim takes over the training of his girls' team out of a guilty conscience. At his father's insistence, he also works in the family's factory. Because his uncle Evil, who also works there, has abused the company account for his drug deals, Sally, who is responsible for finances, is placed in custody. Jim knows of his uncle's guilt, but is forced to remain silent for a long time, because he had given Evil his own checking account for his checks.

Anika and his son Ben give Jim rest and relaxation. It takes him a while to realize this and to get closer to Anika. He doesn't understand what she thinks about him. Ben even adores him, which makes him embarrassed. He can hardly stand it with the smiled at parents and thinks about going away again.

He suggests that Anika go with him to New Orleans, where she dreams of living. She is skeptical and finds the step very difficult. Jim is disappointed but ready to start over in New Orleans without her. When he wants to leave, Anika catches him and wishes him all the best. After a moment's hesitation, he decides to get off the approaching intercity bus and stay with her and her son.

Reviews

Peter Travers wrote in Rolling Stone magazine on March 21, 2006 that Buscemi's “ sly ” humor and sense of nuance would shape the film. The film “ find its way into the heart of the viewer ” (“ this deadpan delight finds its wily way into your heart ”).

Michael Wilmington wrote in the Chicago Tribune that Steve Buscemi was " drier " and " calmer " as a director than as an actor. Lonesome Jim is a good example of this - although it's not always a good movie. Wilmington praised Liv Tyler and Mark Boone Jr .; Mary Kay Place could be liked, but she seemed " pathetic ".
