action

In the future, almost all women have perished in a mysterious pandemic. A father does anything to protect Rag, whose mother also died. He insists that she dress like a boy and keeps her away from other people. Rag never saw any other girl or woman. Only in his bedtime stories, which he thinks up spontaneously, does he tell her about strong women. Rag and her father live in a tent in the woods, and he has built an alarm system around the small camp made of wires and tin cans. If the father senses danger, for example from uninvited visitors to their camp, they move on. So you come across a house that looks abandoned. Even if it seems safe, has running water and even a children's room, the father does not want to stay there, but his daughter persuades him to stay there. However, the fact that Rag tries on the girls' clothes he has found does not go down well with her father. Rag also reacts rather disinterestedly when he tries to educate his daughter and prepare her for what changes her body can expect in the near future.

After a visit to the nearby town, where you haven't seen a boy of this age for a long time, strangers notice Rag. Visited by them, Rag and her father first flee to a church. She begins to wonder what would happen if she got into the hands of strangers or if her father died. On their further journey, the father takes the car of a young man who wanted to take the two hitchhikers with him. They drive to the house where his grandparents once lived. Since this was uninhabited for years, you will find three religious men there. Rag can live a carefree, almost normal life for a while, occupy himself with the llamas and sheep or build figures out of snow. However, one of the men quickly realizes that Rag is really not a boy. The father confesses to him for the first time that she is his daughter. The man tells him that there are bunkers in New York and not far from them where the few women who are still alive are housed.

One day three strangers approach the house. The father has to kill two of the men, but the third overpowers him. A rifle shot by his daughter at the attacker saves his life. However, he is hit by the shotgun itself. They go to a nearby hut, where Rag is treating her father.

Reviews

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter writes in his review that the film inevitably reminds one of Debra Granik's Leave No Trace . Anna Pniowsky is a real discovery, Rooney continues.

Owen Gleiberman from Variety recalls that Casey Affleck has already been seen in his previous roles in slowly built films that enjoy their high spirits and that it is therefore only logical that he acted similarly on his directorial debut. His survival drama is peppered with allusions to science fiction apocalypses, such as The Road or A Quiet Place , but also It Comes at Night . Basically, the film is about the unshakable connection between father and daughter and the way in which it intensifies and deepens, but unfortunately this is not enough to sustain a two-and-a-half hour film, according to Gleiberman.

Even Eric Kohn of Indiewire says, Light of My Life consolidates the sleepy, expressionist style that Affleck in the last 20 years in many of his works has found as an actor. From Gerry to The Assassination of Jesse James by Coward Robert Ford to The Saints - They knew no law , Affleck had a penchant for playing dazed introverts in empty worlds. The Australian cameraman Adam Arkapaw developed the film with a gray-tinted color palette, which provides the exterior shots with picturesque depths, says Kohn, while the composer Daniel Hart created haunting film music. Even if the film is a little lengthy, it becomes extremely lively in the last few minutes. In the exciting ending of the film, he no longer talks about a man who is raising a woman, but rather about a woman who is ready to take on responsibility. It will be a long way until then, but Affleck is doing everything right right at the end.

According to the lexicon of international films , it is a "multi-layered survival drama with excellent actors and atmospheric camera work that relies more on the internal tension between its main characters than on external thrills and also develops a sensitive story of emancipation."
