Robert Ito

Robert Ito (born July 2, 1931 in Vancouver , Canada ) is a Canadian film actor who was best known in Germany as Sam Fujiyama , the assistant to the coroner Quincy in the television series of the same name from 1976 to 1983.

Life

Robert Ito is of Japanese descent and was a professional dancer in Canada's National Ballet for several years before moving to acting in the mid-1960s. He was first seen on television in 1965 in a small guest role in the series Tennis Rackets and Cannons . He played mostly ethnic roles as Japanese, so in several science fiction films (such as Women of the Prehistoric Planet , 1965) and World War II stripes (such as the Battle of Midway , 1976). Ito remained generally limited to small roles for a long time and played in individual episodes of popular series such as Your Appearance, Al Mundy , The Boss and M * A * S * H in the 1970s .

Ito finally gained greater fame from 1976 through the role of Sam Fujiyama , capable assistant to the main character played by Jack Klugman , in the crime series Quincy . The role was made of Japanese origin after the series' creators discovered that a large proportion of the staff in the US pathologies were of Asian origin. Ito remained an integral part of the series until the end of 1983 and appeared in most of the episodes. He continued to have many television roles following Quincy , including as Lawrence 'Larry' Mishima in five episodes of Falcon Crest . His better-known cinema roles include a kidnapped professor in the science fiction film Buckaroo Banzai - The 8th Dimension (1984) and the head of a Japanese-American family forcibly interned after Pearl Harbor in War and Love (1995).

Ito has also appeared as a character spokesperson for many animated series, including Avatar , Captain Planet , The Invincible Iron Man, and Batman . His last job in the film business (as of 2020) was a speaking role in the cartoon series Cars Toon - Hook's Incredible Stories in 2010.
