Gita Dey

Gita Dey ( Bengali : গীতা দে, Gītā De; * August 5, 1931 in Kolkata ; † January 17, 2011 there ) was an Indian actress of the Bengali theater and Bengali film .

Life

As a child she gained her first experiences in the theater and as a film actress in Dhirendranath Gangulys Ahuti (1941), Niren Lahiris Dampati (1943) and Sukumar Dasguptas Nandita (1945) in the early 1940s . She was married at the age of 15 and stopped acting for a few years.

In the 1950s she met the director and actor Sisir Bhaduri and played under his aegis for five years in the Group Theater with the actors Gyanesh Mukherjee , Tulsi Lahiri , Shombhu Mitra , Tulsi Chakraborty , Kanu Bannerjee and Dilip Roy as well as the directors Naresh Mitra and Ahindra Choudhury . From 1956 she was engaged at the Star Theater for 18 years. She had her last theater role in 1996. From 1954 on, she also worked as a radio play speaker for All India Radio .

Dey continued her film work in 1956 with the film Shilpi , followed by Agradoot's Lalu Bhulu (1959) . Since she did not have the necessary looks for romantic film roles, she switched to the character subject. Through the actor Kali Bannerjee , she became known to the director Ritwik Ghatak and took on leading roles in his films Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960), Komal Gandhar (1961) and Subarnarekha (1962). In Samapti , the last episode in Satyajit Ray's Teen Kanya , she played the mother of Aparna Sen .

Gita Dey has appeared in more than 100 films under almost all well-known directors of Bengali film, for example in Tapan Sinhas Jotugriha (1964) and Hatey Bazarey (1967), in Dinen Gupta's directorial debut Natun Pata (1969), under Ajoy Kar , Tarun Majumdar , Arabinda Mukherjee and Raja Sen .

For the Hindi film she only worked occasionally and in small roles, most recently in Parineeta (2005) , among others .
