Tulsi Lahiri
Tulsi Lahiri ( Bengali তুলসী লাহিড়ী Tulsī Lāhiṛī ; born April 7, 1897 in Naldanga , † June 22, 1959 in Calcutta ) was an Indian playwright of the Bengali theater, composer, actor and director of Bengali films .
Life
He comes from a Zamindar family from the Rangpur district in eastern Bengal . After completing his BA and BL studies , he worked as a lawyer in Rangpur and later in Calcutta. At first he wrote plays and music as a part-time job. After the singer Jamiruddin Khan recorded two of his songs, Lahiri became music director for the labels His Master's Voice and Megaphone, where he met his wife, the singer Kamala Jharia . He gave up his legal practice and devoted himself entirely to his artistic career as a stage actor, playwright and film actor. His socially critical plays were particularly close to the Indian People's Theater Association in the 1940s and were brought to the stage by Durgadas Bannerjee , Sisir Bhaduri and Sombhu Mitra . Several of his plays were made into films, including Pathik (1939 by Charu Roy and 1953 by Debaki Bose ) and Dukhir Iman (1954 by Sushil Majumdar ).
His film career began in the early 1930s with the East India Film Company , one of the first sound film studios in Bengal. He starred in Charu Roy's film Bangalee (1936), the music of which he also wrote, Prafulla Roys Thikadar (1940) and Satyajit Rays Jalsaghar (1958).
