Dhirendranath Ganguly

Dhirendranath Ganguly (also Dhiren Ganguly for short ; Bengali ধীরেন্দ্রনাথ গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় Dhīrendranāth Gaṅgopādhyāẏ ; born March 26, 1893 in Calcutta ; † November 18, 1978 ibid) was an Indian film director , actor and painter . He was one of the pioneers of Bengali film .

Life

Dhirendranath Ganguly studied painting in Shantiniketan and from 1910 to 1915 at Calcutta Art College. Immediately after graduating in 1915, he got a job as an art teacher at Nizam's Art College in Hyderabad . He was also successful as a portrait painter and expanded his ambitions into the field of photography. Ganguly published two photo volumes Bhaber Abhibyakti (1915) and Biye (1922), in which he himself was seen as a model in photo montages.

After the first volume, he received an invitation from Jamshedji Framji Madan to join his company, Madan Theaters . Ganguly went to Calcutta, but in 1918 he founded the Indo-British Films company with Nitish Lahiri. Their first film production was the contemporary satire Bilet Pherat (1921) with Ganguly in the lead role, which was a great commercial success. The film is about a Bengal who returns to his homeland after a stay in England and annoys his family with his "westernized" views. In 1923 the film company broke up again and Ganguly went back to Hyderabad, where he founded his new company, Lotus Film Company, and made a few films until 1924.

After a short stay in Bombay , he returned to Calcutta in 1928. There he founded the film company British Dominion Films in Dum Dum together with Pramathesh Chandra Barua , which, however, ceased operations in 1931 after eight film productions at the start of the sound film age. Ganguly then worked as a freelance actor and director from 1933 until the late 1940s. He also worked for New Theaters several times . Among his later films are two adaptations of plays Premendra Mitras , Ahuti (1941) and Daabi (1943).

Dhirendranath Ganguly was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1974 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1975 .
