Manolo Escobar
Manuel García Escobar (born October 19, 1931 in Almería , Spain , † October 24, 2013 in Benidorm , Spain), better known under the name Manolo Escobar , was a Spanish singer of Andalusian and Spanish coplas . He also worked as an actor in several music films . His successes include the songs "El porompompero" (1960), "Mi carro" (1969) and "Y viva España" (1973).
Life
Manolo Escobar was the fifth child of Antonio García and María del Carmen Escobar. He dedicated the song “Madrecita María del Carmen” to his mother. At the age of 14 he went to Barcelona with his brothers. There he worked as an apprentice in various trades. Escobar started his show career in the Badalona area (Barcelona) and the El Raval district in Barcelona. Together with his brothers Salvador and Baldomero he performed as the "Manolo Escobar Group and their guitars". With the group's success, another brother, Juan Gabriel, joined the group.
In 1959 Manolo Escobar married the German Anita Marx (1936–2017). The wedding took place in Cologne. The two met in a holiday resort on the Costa Brava.
Escobar and his wife later adopted a daughter. Manolo Escobar dedicated the song “Mi pequeña flor”, Spanish for “my little flower”, to his adopted daughter.
Manolo Escobar played with Rocio Jurado in the film Los Guerilleros in 1962 . From then on until 1979 at least one movie was released every year in which Manolo Escobar played the male lead. His last film, Todo es posible en Granada, hit Spanish cinemas in 1983.
He has been famous since 1973 for the song Y viva España , written by the Belgian composer Leo Caerts and the lyricist Leo Rozenstraten. The Dutch original was called Eviva España , but that doesn't make sense in Spanish and was therefore changed to "and long live Spain". The original version of the long-playing record of the same name was sold 6 million, followed by another 10 million. By 1992 it was the best-selling LP in Spanish music history. He was also known as a popular interpreter of the Copla andaluza .
