Alma Rubens (born February 19, 1897 in San Francisco as Alma Genevieve Reubens , California , USA , † January 22, 1931 in Los Angeles ) was an actress of the silent film era .

Life

Alma Rubens was the daughter of John B. Rueben and his wife Theresa, geb. Hayes. She began her career after a few minor roles, including alongside Charles Ruggles in Peer Gynt and in 1916 as Leading Lady of Douglas Fairbanks Sr. in The Americano . Her career peaked in the early 1920s. At that time under contract with Paramount Pictures , Rubens mostly played supporting roles, often as a vamp and exotic beauty. In 1920 she was seen in Frank Borzage's Humoreske , the film adaptation of the novel by Fannie Hurst , in one of the few likeable roles.

From the middle of the decade, the number and quality of the roles decreased. One of the few A-films in which she still appeared was a role alongside John Gilbert in Victor Sjöström's Masks of the Devil in 1928 . In the following year Rubens was seen in Show Boat , the first film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Edna Ferber, alongside Laura La Plante and Joseph Schildkraut as a tragic mulatto on the screen. The film was shot as a silent film and later partially dubbed. The voice of Rubens could not be heard. She had her last appearance in 1929 in Henry Kings She Goes to War on the side of Eleanor Boardman . The actress did not make the transition to the sound film , and she died in 1931 of pneumonia, which resulted in complications as a result of years of drug abuse.
