Laura La Plante (born November 1, 1904 in St. Louis , Missouri - † October 14, 1996 in Woodland Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

Life

Laura La Plante began her career as an extra at the age of 15 and quickly became popular. At the age of 20 she was the biggest star of Universal Studios and was mostly used as the nice girl next door in comedies. In 1923 she became one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars of the Year, a selection of actresses who were most likely to become real stars . La Plante's best-known roles were during the transition from silent to sound films. In the 1927 comedy The Cat and the Canary she was seen as the haunted innocence in a haunted house, in the opulent film adaptation of Show Boat from 1929 she played the part of Magnolia . In 1930 the actress ended her contract with the studio and went to England, where she made a number of so-called quota quickies , cheaply made program films. From 1934 until his death in 1985 she was married to the film producer Irving Asher . They had two children together. She had previously been married to director William A. Seiter from 1926 to 1934 .

She had her last appearance in front of the film camera in 1957 as the mother of Betty Hutton in the drama Spring Reunion .

Laura La Plante died in 1996 in a retirement home for the film industry in Woodland Hills, California.
