Françoise Arnoul (born June 3, 1931 in Constantine , Algeria ; actually Françoise Annette Marie Mathilde Gautsch ; † July 20, 2021 ) was a French actress .

Life

Françoise Arnoul was the daughter of General Charles Gautsch (1882-1969) and the stage actress Janine Henry. She had two brothers. She first attended a lyceum in Rabat. In 1945 the family moved to Paris and attended the Lycée Molière, while the father continued his service in Morocco .

Arnoul took a class for classical drama in Paris, but her first film role, which she took on in the title role at the age of 18 in Willy Rozier's drama Perrucha, The Daughter of the Night ( L'Épave , 1949), gave her a disreputable image that she could not shed in the years that followed. In her role as Perrucha, Arnoul is considered to be the world's first high-profile film actress to appear in an underwater film. She was one of the stars of the French post-war film in frivolous roles typical of that time. However, she was also able to establish herself as a character actress, primarily on French television.

Arnoul became known to the German audience primarily through Henri Verneuil's Simenon film Verbotene Frucht (1952, original title: Le Fruit défendu ) with Fernandel and Jean Renoir's comedy French Can Can (1955) with Jean Gabin or in the two spy and resistance films The Cat ( La Chatte , 1958) and The Cat Shows the Claws , ( La Chatte sort ses griffes , 1960) directed by Henri Decoin . In the cat , the German players seemed Bernhard Wicki and Kurt Meisel with, in the cat shows its claws Horst Frank .

While filming French Can Can , Arnoul met the publicist Georges Cravenne . The marriage between the two of them in 1956 broke up four years later, and in 1964 they divorced. In the same year the actress met the director Bernard Paul , with whom she lived until his death in 1980. In later years Arnoul also took on roles in the theater, working primarily for French television.
