Thérèse Étienne is a French-Italian film melodrama from 1957, based on the novel Therese Etienne (original title: Into the Abyss ) by John Knittel . The German premiere took place on March 21, 1958.

content

Thérèse Étienne leaves her parents and works in Switzerland as the maid of the rich landowner Anton Müller. She can hardly resist his advances, so she attempts suicide. Müller then marries her. Her true love, Müller's stepson Gottfried, gets her pregnant. After Anton discovered the affair and its consequences, Therese poisoned him; Gottfried takes on the deed and is considered to be guilty until Therese confesses the truth.

criticism

"A melodrama routinely staged with a lot of anguish and heartache on the verge of kitsch, which, despite all the atmospheric density and careful design, lacks too much depth to be able to say essentials about people or" evil "."
