biography

Lou Jacobi was born in Toronto to Jewish parents. In 1957 he married Ruth Ludwin. At the age of twelve he was already enthusiastic about the theater and played a role in a play called The Rabbi . In the late 1940s, Jacobi first worked as a stand-up comedian before being cast in the musical Spring Thaw by his long-time friend Don Harron .

His career as a film actor began in the early 1950s in Wedding Night ( Is Your Honeymoon Really Necessary? , 1953). In addition to acting in film and television, he took on the role of Mr. van Daan in 1955 for two years in the Pulitzer Prize- winning and Tony- winning Broadway production The Diary of Anne Frank , directed by Garson Kanin . He took on the same role in the 1959 Oscar- winning version of the film. Even after that he took on a number of roles in various plays. In 1963, in Billy Wilder's The Girl Irma la Douce , he took on the role of Mustache, which was originally intended to play Charles Laughton , but who could no longer play it because of his illness. Wilder, who admired Laughton very much, was nevertheless very impressed by Jacobi's performance.

In addition to numerous film roles, he also had frequent guest appearances in television series. For example in Alfred Hitchcock Presents , chief physician Dr. Westphall or Cagney & Lacey . His best-known films as an actor include Woody Allen's What You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, but Were Afraid to Ask, and IQ Love is Relatively at the side of Tim Robbins and Walter Matthau . After this film he retired from the film business.

In 1999, he was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame , a memorial to famous Canadians.
