Tiverton is a town ( Town ) in Newport County of the US state of Rhode Iceland in the United States . Tiverton is also the birthplace of the navigator and first American circumnavigator, Robert Gray, who was born in 1755 .

geography

Tiverton is on the northeast shore of Narragansett Bay . The urban area is cut off by land like the town of Little Compton, south of Tiverton, from the rest of Rhode Island, and only connected to the city of Portsmouth on the island of Rhode Island and thus to the rest of the state via the Sakonnet Bridge . Just north of the city is the border with the state of Massachusetts , across which the city of Fall River is the main hub for Tiverton.

The city of Tiverton and the northern district of North Tiverton lie on an elongated granite ridge that reaches a height of up to 75 m above sea level. The urban area has an area of ​​94.1 km², it is predominantly forested and apart from the coast only heavily populated on the eastern edge. There are several lakes in the urban area, the largest of which is Stafford Pond in the northeast corner of the urban area. Due to the peculiarities of the New England administrative division , the metropolitan area of ​​Tiverton includes several villages including Eagleville, Bliss Corners, Adamsville and Grayville.

history

Tiverton was originally part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony since 1694 . After a long dispute between Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the city area was added to the state of Rhode Island in 1746 by decree of the king along with Cumberland , Barrington , Bristol and Little Compton. The city was founded in 1747.

The city was originally oriented towards agriculture, other industries were fishing and shipbuilding. In 1827 cotton and wool mills were added as a source of income. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the production of menhaden fish oil was also a main source of income for the city's population.

Today, mainly trading companies have settled in the city. Summer tourism has increased in importance, as has its function as a residential area.
