Castaño Santo
The Castaño Santo is a sacred chestnut tree in the Sierra de las Nieves , Andalusia .
The chestnut tree is around 800 to 1000 years old and its circumference on the ground is around 15 meters. The projected canopy area is around 510 m² and it is probably the oldest of all trees in the province of Málaga . The tree is located about 23 miles from the village of Istán on the wayside from Monda to Las Vegas . All-wheel drive is recommended when using a car.
According to legend, Ferdinand the Catholic ( Aragonese : Ferrando II o Catolico) celebrated a holy thanksgiving mass under his branches in 1501.
The chestnut tree was declared a natural monument by the Andalusian government in 1985 .
