The KSU Gazal-1 is an off-road vehicle developed on the basis of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class by students at King Saud University . The vehicle was presented to the world public for the first time in March 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show . The prospective engineers received support in the development of the vehicle from the Austrian automobile manufacturer Magna Steyr and the Italian design studio Studiotorino . The model was scheduled for mass production of 20,000 units per year. The countries of the Middle East should be the predominant sales market . The Gazal-1 is also considered to be the first automobile to be developed and produced in Saudi Arabia .
The first production vehicle of the model rolled off the assembly line on June 15, 2010. King Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aziz , who led part of the presentation, also took part in the celebrations to mark the start of production in the MAN Nutzfahrzeuge assembly plant in Jeddah . The public presentation finally took place a few hours later in the Jeddah Palace and then another in the university.
The Gazal-1 was specially developed for use in road traffic as well as for use in dunes and desert regions . The Mercedes-Benz G 500 was chosen as the basis , as the G-Class is very popular in the Middle East. So far, only a gasoline engine with a displacement of 5461 cm³ and an output of 285 kW (388 hp) with a torque of 530 Nm has been offered as a drive . The consumption of the heavy vehicle is t 2.4 km from the unit for a distance of 100 with 14.7 l of Super - fuel indicated. The design-related maximum speed should be 210 km / h. Technically, the model corresponds completely to the original, only the body has been redesigned.
The model name used "Gazal" ( غزال) comes from the Arabic language and means gazelle . According to the manufacturer, the name was derived from the desert gazelle , one of the fastest and most resilient creatures in this area. However, this species is currently threatened with extinction.
