The Mercedes-Benz M 102 is an in- line engine with four cylinders . The gasoline engine was from 1980 to 1996 in different cars and SUVs from Mercedes-Benz used.
introduction
Two-valve
The engine was first used in 1980 in the 200 and 230 E models of the W 123 series , where it replaced the M 115 . The mixture is formed either by means of a carburetor or (in the 230 E) by a Bosch K-Jetronic - intake manifold injection .
Since Daimler-Benz had high hopes for the Wankel engine at the end of the 1960s , the development of modern gasoline engines was missed. The W 123 presented in 1976 initially took over the largely obsolete engines of the previous model. The only exception was initially the M 123 , a six-cylinder carburettor engine newly developed for the W 123. It was not until 1980 that Mercedes-Benz introduced the four-cylinder M 102 (long after the six-cylinder M 110 from 1972), a modern unit with a cross-flow cylinder head that combined lower fuel consumption with a better torque curve.
The engine is lighter and more powerful than its predecessor, the M 115 . The gray cast iron - engine block is designed with modern pulled down via the crankshaft center of thinner walls and more stiffening ribs and opposite to that of the M 115 by about 10 kg lighter. The light metal cylinder head has two V-shaped hanging valves per cylinder, which are actuated by a centrally located camshaft via rocker arms.
When the model was changed to the 124 series , the valve train was modernized with hydraulic valve clearance compensation. The vulnerable simple timing chain was replaced by a duplex chain. Instead of the previous V-belts , the ancillary units were driven by a single V-ribbed belt with an automatic tensioning device.
In 1993 the M 102 was deleted from the model range and replaced by the M 111 . One major reason was that the M 102 could not be manufactured on the same facilities as the diesel engines . When there was a shift in demand between gasoline and diesel engines, unnecessary problems arose.
Four-valve
At the International Motor Show in 1983, Mercedes-Benz presented the 190 E 2.3-16 as a sporty version of the 190 . Recognizable from the outside as a compact sports car through the front and rear spoiler, wide tires and lowering, the new model in the series featured new technology, especially under the bonnet. The M 102/2 was based on the four-cylinder known from the 230 E. This received a cylinder head completely redesigned by Cosworth with four valves per cylinder. Forged pistons, a specially hardened crankshaft, camshafts made of chilled cast iron and hardened bucket tappets were used to make the engine stable at higher speeds. Since the simple timing chain in the 230 E was too weak and the hydraulic chain tensioners and camshaft sprockets are considered to be vulnerable, we recommend replacing them after 100,000 kilometers at the latest. On the other hand, run-in camshafts, as can occur with two-valve engines, are not known to exist in these engines. With the introduction of the 190 E 2.5-16 , a more stable duplex timing chain was used. The 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution was produced in a limited edition (502 pieces) in 1989 and served as a homologation model for the DTM . The 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II followed in 1990, of which only 502 were also produced. Technically, the M-102-E-25/2 engine was further modified to meet the requirements of racing. In order to achieve higher speeds and to enable further increases in performance, the motor was designed with a shorter stroke overall.
