Manfred Weißbecker
Manfred Weißbecker (born February 8, 1935 in Chemnitz ) is a German Marxist historian .
Life and work
Manfred Weißbecker studied history , German language and literature and education at the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) in Jena and after completing his studies worked there at the historical institute. In 1962 he was at the University of Jena with the work "The Communist Party of Germany in the fight against the fascist dictatorship in Thuringia 1933-1935" Dr. phil. PhD . In 1963, Weißbecker was party secretary of the basic SED organization of historians. He later became a professor nominated for history at the FSU, where he in 1967 with the work, "Studies on the effects of the Great October Socialist Revolution and the November revolution to the parties and the party system of German imperialism in the years 1917-1923" habilitation had. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , Weißbecker retired in 1992. He was one of the initiators for founding the “Jena Forum for Education and Science e. V. ”, today part of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Thuringia, of which he was chairman for many years.
Weißbecker was married to his wife Bärbel for 57 years, who died in 2013. He is the father of his daughter Ines.
Research areas
Weißbecker has published numerous studies in the field of fascism research on resistance and the history of the German labor movement . He is a proven specialist in party history and party research, which he helped shape with numerous publications and articles. He played a major role in the handbook published between 1968 and 1970: The bourgeois parties in Germany 1830–1945, as well as in the four-volume Lexicon of Party History and the first comprehensive presentation of the NSDAP in cooperation with Kurt Pätzold : Hakenkreuz und Totenkopf. The Party of Crime (1982), which was later reissued as History of the NSDAP - 1920–1945 (1998).
