Joachim Niemeyer

Joachim Niemeyer (born December 27, 1940 in Hamburg ) is a German lawyer and military historian . He was the director of the Military History Museum in Rastatt .

Life

Niemeyer was born the son of a Rittmeister and his wife. In 1963 he graduated from the Herderschule grammar school in Lüneburg and did two years of military service in the German armed forces.

He then studied law as well as history, political science and sociology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and the Free University of Berlin . In 1970 he passed the first state examination in law.

He then studied history and political science at the Westphalian Wilhelm University in Münster. From 1973 to 1976 he was research assistant at the German Research Foundation (DFG) at Werner Hahlweg's chair for military history . In 1978 he was then at the Philosophical Faculty with the dissertation The Austrian military system in transition. Investigations into the image of war between 1830 and 1866 for Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1995 to 2003 he was the first civilian director (director and manager ) of the Defense History Museum (WGM) in the Residenzschloss in Rastatt. Until 2015 he was second chairman of the Association of Friends of the Defense History Museum Schloss Rastatt eV In addition, from 1998 to 2002 he was chairman of the German Society for Heereskunde .
