John Zimmermann (* 1968 in Bruchsal ) is a German officer ( lieutenant colonel ) and military historian at the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1988, Zimmermann joined the German Armed Forces as an officer candidate and completed training as an army officer with the paratrooper battalion 252 in Nagold until 1993 . He then studied history and social sciences until 1997 at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg (MA 1996) with subsequent use in troop service, again with the paratrooper troops (Parachute Defense Battalion 272 in Wildeshausen ).

Between 1998 and 2000 he worked for the first time as a research assistant at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Potsdam, before he was employed as a lecturer in military history at the Air Force Officers' School (OSLw) in Fürstenfeldbruck until 2007 . At the same time, he was working on his dissertation and, in 2006, started with Bernd Wegner at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg with the thesis Duty to Downfall? - The German military warfare in the west of the Reich 1944/45 to the Dr. phil. PhD . From 2007 he was again a research assistant at the MGFA, and since 2008 a lecturer at the University of Potsdam Military History / Cultural History of Violence. Zimmermann completed his habilitation in 2011 with Bernhard R. Kroener at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Potsdam with the thesis Ulrich de Maizière (1912-2006). General of the Bonn Republic . He then received the Venia legendi for modern and contemporary history and became a private lecturer at the chair for military history / cultural history of violence. In 2013 he also became editor of the military history magazine (MGZ).

In 2014 he headed the operational support project area at the newly founded Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw) in Potsdam. In 2014/15 he was the head of the redesign of the Military History Museum at Berlin-Gatow Airport . In 2016 he took over the management of the project German Military History of the 19th Century in the research area Military History to 1945 at the ZMSBw. His research focus is also the history of the Austrian labor movement .

He is a member of the Military History Working Group , the Commission internationale d'histoire militaire and the German Committee for the History of the Second World War . In addition, his research areas include the history of the Austrian labor movement . He published u. a. in sheets for German national history , historical journals , yearbooks for the history of Eastern Europe and communications from the Institute for Austrian Historical Research .
