Wolfgang Schmidt (historian)
Wolfgang Schmidt (* 1958 in Regensburg ) is a German military historian .
Life
Schmidt joined the Bundeswehr in 1978 as a reserve officer candidate . From 1980 to 1985 he studied history and political science at the University of Regensburg with a master's degree . In 1988 he received a scholarship from the Free State of Bavaria at the chair for Bavarian regional history ( Wilhelm Volkert ) with the dissertation The Garrison City of Regensburg in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a Dr. phil. PhD. The work was awarded the Professor Josef Engert Prize of the City of Regensburg.
From 1989 to 1995 he was a teaching staff officer for military history at the Air Force Officer's School (OSLw) in Fürstenfeldbruck . In 1995 he came to the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Potsdam as a historian staff officer . From 1999 he was a lecturer at the Otto Suhr Institute at the Free University of Berlin , at the Center for Research on Antisemitism at the TU Berlin and at the University of Potsdam ("Military Studies" course).
From 2008 to 2010 he was a senior lecturer in military history in the security policy and strategy department at the Federal Armed Forces Leadership Academy (FüAkBw) in Hamburg . Since 2010 he has been head of the social analysis and history department in the human and social sciences department. His work focuses on military history, the history of civil-military relations and the cultural history of the armed forces. He currently holds the rank of Colonel in the Air Force .
