Józef Brandt (born February 11, 1841 in Szczebrzeszyn , † June 12, 1915 in Radom ) was a Polish painter in Munich , who mainly devoted himself to history painting. He is assigned to the Munich School .

Life

Brandt initially devoted himself to engineering and therefore attended the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris from 1858 , but soon turned to painting. In 1860 he traveled to eastern Poland with the painter Juliusz Kossak (1824–1899). In 1863 he went to Munich, where he studied since February 17, 1863 in the class of antiquities of the Royal Academy of Arts with Karl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886), as well as in the private studios of Franz Adam (1815-1886) and the watercolor courses of Theodor Horschelt (1829–1871). In 1867 he set up his own studio in Munich, which he kept until his death. He spent the summer months in the village of Orońsko near Radom . In 1877 he married Helena von Woyciechowski Pruszaków, the owner of the Orońsko estate. He was friends with Władysław Szerner , together they visited the Ukraine and Volhynia .

He made pictures of soldiers and wars, mostly from the 17th century, and genre scenes from the lives of his compatriots, which he masterfully characterized, as his main subject.

One of his first larger pictures was An Attack by Polish Horsemen on Turks in the 17th Century in 1867 .

  • Polish country people in front of a brandy tavern (1868),
