Theodor Horschelt (born March 16, 1829 in Munich ; † April 3, 1871 there ) was a German painter.

Theodor Horschelt, son of the ballet master Friedrich Horschelt , became a pupil of Joseph Anton Rhomberg in 1846 , but left the same after a short period of time and drew a lot, but without instruction, based on the natural landscape, while sketching scenes from the war in the Caucasus.

Then, under the direction of Hermann Anschütz , Horschelt learned the correctness of the drawing and the sharpness of the outlines. After leaving the academy, Horschelt was never actually a painter's pupil, even if he received many valuable artistic stimuli in the studio of Albrecht and Franz Adams and Julius Langes .

At that time (1850) he exhibited a game shooter in the art association. Soon afterwards he also drew excellent illustrations for Charles Boner's work Chamois hunting in the mountains of Bavaria and various drafts of war scenes from the Caucasus.

Depictions from wartime life occupied his imagination so much that he decided to devote himself entirely to them, for which he began his preliminary studies on horses in the Marstall in Stuttgart.

From there, in 1853, Horschelt went via Paris with Hackländer and Leins to Spain, most of which was traveled on horseback, and then to Oran. Here his companions separated from him, and he rode to Algiers via Miliana and Medea.

After his return to Munich in 1854 he painted the Arabs' rest in the desert for the King of Württemberg, then the Moorish camp near Algiers . This enabled him to make the long-planned trip to the Caucasus, where soon after his arrival in 1858 he joined the expedition against the Lesghier .

The next year he took part in the expeditions to Chechina and against Shamil's headquarters, repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire, which earned him the Order of Stanislaus and St. Anne with the swords.

Horschelt spent the year 1860 in the field and then toured the banks of the Caspisee and Armenia in the entourage of Prince Albrecht of Prussia, before returning to Munich via Moscow and Petersburg in 1863.

His now completed works quickly helped him to gain well-deserved recognition. There were two oil paintings: Shamil, the colonel commanding prince caught Alexander Ivanovich Baryatinsky presented , and storming of the fortifications on the mountain Gunib , also a number of excellent watercolors and chalk drawings of Jos. Albert photographs. H. combined a rare talent with inexhaustible productive power, high technical perfection with the greatest freedom of performance and surprising boldness of composition with extraordinary originality.
