Life

On the Rhine near Nonnenwerth , 1850

Through his brother, the art printer and publisher Gustav Georg Lange , Julius was already involved in his project Views of the Most Beautiful Regions of Germany in Steel and Copper Engravings (1832) at the age of 15 . The architect Ludwig Lange , another brother, was also involved in this work. From 1836 to 1839 Lange was a student of the painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . With his support, Lange was later able to settle in Munich.

Larger orders then helped Lange to financial success: the art academy in Venice commissioned him with the execution of a series of sketches for the study of landscape painting ; the Academy in Milan had two larger pictures painted by him. During his stay in northern Italy , Lange was also able to establish contacts with the Milanese court. Until 1858 he held the position of art teacher for Archduchess Charlotte of Belgium , who later became Empress of Mexico.

At the end of 1858 Lange returned to Munich and found access to the royal court here too. Since the Bavarian King Maximilian developed a soft spot for him, Munich society quickly became aware of him. Maximilian's son, King Ludwig II , also acquired two landscapes for the Neue Pinakothek . Lange created several watercolors and gouaches for Ludwig II - in connection with the planned construction projects for the Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof palaces , mainly French palace views, but also interior designs for the palaces of King Ludwig II.

Almost six weeks before his 61st birthday, Julius Lange died on June 25, 1878 in Munich.
