Wladyslaw Szerner

Władysław Szerner (born June 3, 1836 in Warsaw ; † January 4, 1915 in Unterhaching ) was a Polish genre and horse painter who worked in Munich.

Szerner studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1862 under Rafał Hadziewicz , Aleksander Kamiński, Christian Breslauer and Marcin Zaleski .

Since October 23, 1865 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Sándor Wagner , Hermann Anschütz and Alexander Strähuber .

After graduating, he stayed in Munich and worked mainly as a horse painter. He was friends with Józef Brandt and influenced by him. Together they made trips to Volhynia and Ukraine . Szerner also visited Brandt in his summer residence in Orońsko near Radom .

From 1874 to 1909 he was a member of the Munich Art Association and took part in its art exhibitions. He also exhibited his works in Krakow , Lviv and Warsaw .

Szerner created battle pictures from Polish history, depicting the participants in Poland's wars with the Swedes, Tatars and Cossacks. He also painted idyllic genre pictures from the lives of Polish and Hutsul farmers.

His son, Władysław Karol Szerner (1870–1936), also studied from October 13, 1888 at the Munich Academy under Johann Caspar Herterich , Gabriel Hackl and Wilhelm von Diez . He signed his works as Władysław Szerner jun. , he often copied his father's works.
