life and work

Oil painting by J.Wannenmacher, Johannes chapter 5 verse 2, from 1770

Wannenmacher was the son of the potter Johann Georg W. († 1740) and his third wife Barbara, née Schmid. He received his training in Rome and occasionally signed as "Accademico Romano pittore". Wannenmacher has worked in numerous churches and monasteries in southwest Germany and Switzerland and his work comprises 14 larger ceiling painting cycles. Among other things, he created the cardinal's room in the Marchtal monastery , the ceiling painting of the pilgrimage church "Ave Maria" in Deggingen , the ceiling painting of St. Martinus in Donzdorf and the frescos of the preacher church in Rottweil , the ceiling paintings of the church in Zollikon , the collegiate library of St. Gallen and under the direction of Johann Christian Wentzinger the painting of the choir of the collegiate church St. Gallen . Several works are also in Schwabisch Gmund been preserved, including the Franciscan church , the St. Leonhard church and the hospital chapel of St. Catherine . In the former Elchingen monastery , to which Wannenmacher Tomerdingen's birthplace belonged, several objects from his oeuvre have been preserved, such as three guild candles, a large craftsman's flag (1775), canvas paintings and frescoes (sacristy). In addition to the Württemberg State Museum, the Ulm Museum owns panel paintings , of which Wannenmacher created around 100 .

Characteristic of Wannenmacher's style are figures wrapped in fluffy robes with rococo gracefully moving arms and legs. The dark colors of his works differ considerably from the cheerful rococo paintings of other southern German artists of his time.

Perhaps precisely because of this otherness in his art, Wannenmacher was highly valued by contemporaries.
