Adolar Zumkeller
Adolar Zumkeller OSA (born June 3, 1915 in Erfurt as Walter Zumkeller ; † April 21, 2011 in Würzburg ) was a German theologian and one of the most important researchers of the order history of the Augustinian hermits.
Life
Walter (later religious name Adolar) Zumkeller was born on June 3, 1915 in Erfurt, where he attended the Catholic rectorate school and then the grammar school. In 1927 he left home and hometown, passed his Abitur in 1933 in Münnerstadt and entered the novitiate of the Augustinian order , where he began studying theology and philosophy in 1934. In 1938 he was ordained a priest and two years later he received his doctorate in Catholic theology under Friedrich Stegmüller with the thesis "Hugolin von Orvieto and his theological theory of knowledge". In December of the same year he was drafted into the medical service of the German Wehrmacht and, after completing basic training, was transferred to one of the many war hospitals in Würzburg. In 1942, Hans Meyer received his doctorate in philosophy with an investigation into "Dionysius de Montina and his doctrine of the knowledge of God. A contribution to the history of literature and philosophy in the late Middle Ages". After three months imprisonment with the Americans, he returned to the monastery. From 1945 to 1950 he was a novice master in Münnerstadt, during which time the work "The Monasticism of St. Augustine", begun in the last years of the war, was published. In 1950/52 he did practical pastoral work as a chaplain at the parish of the order in Berlin. 1952–1957 he worked as a Magister for the clergy and was active in extraordinary pastoral care in Würzburg. In these years, when there was less opportunity for scientific work, numerous journal articles on late medieval Augustinian theology were published.
Adolar Zumkeller had an international name by 1956 at the latest.
From 1957 to 1965 followed a fruitful period of scientific research as prior of the re-established Augustinian convent in Munich: Completion of the research on the literature and teaching of the Westphalian Augustinian theologian Hermann von Schildesche; Publication of a two-volume document book for the Augustinian monasteries in Würzburg and Münnerstadt; Publication of a manuscript catalog of the works of all medieval Augustinian theologians; Edition of a new translation volume of the anti-Pelagian writings of St. Augustine; Start of regular participation in the Roman religious magazine "Analecta Augustiniana". In 1960, the theological series "Cassiciacum" was co-edited (Augustinus-Verlag, Würzburg) and Adolar Zumkeller was elected to the editorial team of the quarterly "Augustinianum" published by the Theological College of the Order in Rome, as well as working on the manual of the History of the Augustinian Order. In 1967 he took over the management of the editorial staff.
1960 appointed by John XXIII. as consultor of the preparatory work for the Second Vatican Council and participation in the commission for religious. 1965 external highlight: election by the Augustinian General Chapter for six years to the Advisory Board of the Order General (General Assistant) for the Central European Order Provinces based in Rome. High office, responsible tasks, frequent business trips, also beyond the borders of Europe, nevertheless - favored by the good Roman library conditions - continuation of scientific work on a large scale. From 1971 to 1978 Adolar Zumkeller was professor at the Pontifical Lateran University . In 1971 he returned to Würzburg and took over the management of the Augustinus Institute of the German Augustinians, an office that he held until 1998. During this time he was a provincial councilor several times and held lectures and retreats for decades as a clerical council of sisters of the Augustinian Federation.
Adolar Zumkeller dies on April 21, 2011 at the age of 95 in Würzburg.
