Chaplain Sebastian Zeiler bought the property for 8,000 guilders so that the Sisters of Mercy from Strasbourg could build their mother house there. But after the motherhouse was set up in Bocksgasse 20 , the sanatorium or insane asylum of St. Vincent was built here . The Catholic private insane asylum, which also performed the tasks of a district insane asylum, was opened on February 1, 1864. The building was designed by senior building officer Georg von Morlok in Stuttgart, and the construction was carried out by building inspector Neker from Aalen .

In 1898 the institution was relocated to Rottweil- Rottenmünster (today Vinzenz-von-Paul-Hospital ). 94 sick people took a special train to Rottweil. Now the housekeeping school run by the Sisters of Mercy came here from Bocksgasse. It was named St. Loreto after the cult image of Maria von Haus Loreto. Around 1900 there was also a Marienheim for girls working classes in St. Loreto before they could move into their own house at Paradiesstraße 20 in 1902. From 1918 kindergarten teachers were also trained here; In 1902 the St. Paul Kindergarten, which still exists today, was opened in the Loreto Garden. (The Rupert Mayer day care center, which is also located there, is also sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.)

In 1926 Georg Stütz described the use as follows: Daughter boarding school of the Sisters of Mercy, seminar for private teachers, seminar for kindergarten teachers, sewing school, St. Paulus kindergarten. During the World War, a large part of the building was set up as a reserve hospital . During the Second World War, the building served as a military hospital again from the beginning of the war until November 1, 1940 and from September 1, 1941, with 350 beds it was the largest in Gmünd. On April 20, 1945 the buildings were confiscated by US troops before they were returned to the nuns on April 30, 1946. In 1969 the housekeeping school, where more than 5,000 young people had been trained, was abandoned.

Entrance to the "Institute for Socio-Pedagogical Professions" on the east side (2009)

Today, St. Loreto gGmbH , as the former "Institute for Socio-Pedagogical Professions" has been called since March 7, 2011, is Catholic-sponsored with a further location in Ellwangen, several technical schools and the St. Loreto gGmbH training academy for social and nursing professions .

New socio-educational schools were founded in Aalen (2012) and Ludwigsburg (2013).

The institute's shareholders are:

“On October 18, 1973, the future shareholders met in the Lorch notary's office and completed the transformation of the previous 'daughter institute St. Loreto' into the 'Institute for socio-educational professions, according to GmbH'. The shareholders were initially the Caritas Association of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, the Cooperative of the Sisters of Mercy from Untermarchtal, the Cooperative of the Franciscan Sisters from Canisiushaus Schwäbisch Gmünd and the Children's and Youth Village Marienpflege in Ellwangen. In October 1985 the Haus Lindenhof Foundation joined as a further partner. According to § 2 of the partnership agreement, the purpose of the company is to set up and maintain an institute for the training and advanced training of social professions. In doing so, it is based on the mandate and principles of the Catholic Church. At the beginning of 1974 only the technical school for social pedagogy existed with the training of educators. The previous educational programs of nanny, household school and trade school had been abandoned. In the following years, additional training courses were set up: 1975 training to become a youth and home educator (officially recognized); 1976 training as a curative nurse (officially recognized) part-time, from summer 1982 also full-time; 1990 training as a geriatric nurse (officially recognized). The Catholic Technical School for Social Pedagogy in Ellwangen began training kindergarten teachers in 1973/74. In 1998 the name was finally changed to 'Institute for Social Professions Schwäbisch Gmünd / Ellwangen gem.GmbH'. With this name change, the expansion of the professional spectrum should also be taken into account beyond socio-educational professions. "

On March 7, 2011 the name was changed to “St. Loreto gGmbH, Institute for Social Professions Schwäbisch Gmünd and Ellwangen ”changed in order to give expression to the tradition in the official name. With the acceptance of the Catholic parish of Ludwigsburg as a partner, the name - without the place name - was changed to: St. Loreto, Institute for Social Professions (entry January 17, 2017).
