Albert Deibele

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Albert Deibele (born March 30, 1889 in Oeffingen ; † July 4, 1972 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ; pseudonym Albert Gmünder ) was a German pedagogue , archivist , local researcher and poet . He is considered to be the founder of today's Gmünder Stadtarchiv .

Life

Albert Deibele, son of a teacher of the same name from Oeffingen, attended the elementary school and aspirant school in Schwäbisch Gmünd. He began his teacher training at the preparatory institute in Saulgau before moving back to Schwäbisch Gmünd in 1905 to the seminar there. This was followed by a degree in pedagogy with the main subjects botany and geography at the University of Tübingen .

In 1920 Deibele accepted a senior teaching position at the Schwäbisch Gmünd teacher training college . In the Third Reich , the seminar was moved to Rottweil , where Deibele became the head of the practice school, and further to Heilbronn . After the Second World War , Deibele was commissioned by the Ministry of Culture in Stuttgart to rebuild the teachers' seminar in Schwäbisch Gmünd. In 1946 teaching was resumed, and the facility developed into the Schwäbisch Gmünd Pedagogical Institute and, twenty years later, the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education . When Deibele left her as a senior teacher , he had meanwhile co-authored several school books, including several volumes of the series From Home to the World and With Your Own Strength , which were published by Klett Verlag .

In 1880, a large part of the Imperial City Archives were moved from Schwäbisch Gmünd to Stuttgart , so that only smaller holdings remained in Gmünd. When the Gmünder Heimatblätter were being prepared in 1928 , Deibele first saw the remaining stocks and was dismayed by their condition and storage. In 1930 the city administration gave him permission to sift through and organize the remaining holdings. This was the beginning of the new Schwäbisch Gmünd city archive . On Deibele's initiative and through tireless collecting in the city, the city archive was expanded and steadily expanded. In 1970 Peter Scherer replaced him as head of the city archive.

In 1972 Deibele died at his desk in the Gmünder Stadtarchiv during a meeting. He is buried in the cemetery near St. Leonhard in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

Act as a poet

The work as a poet is in the background for Deibele and so only a few of his works are known or published. In the anthology Feierstunde , which was published in Horb am Neckar in 1926 , the poems Hünengrab , Auf dem Moorkanal , Tod und Leben and Oktobertrost are published under the pseudonym Albert Gmünder .

Work as city archivist and historian

In addition to setting up the new city archive and expanding it, Deibele endeavored to convey the history of Gmünd in numerous publications. He was a co-author of the Gmünder Heimatblätter (1928–1966), published numerous articles, including in the Einhorn-Jahrbuch Schwäbisch Gmünd , and was the author of various monographs. With Alfons Nitsch , for example, he published the two-volume work Documents and Files of the Former Imperial City of Schwäbisch Gmünd 777–1500 . But his works War and End of War in Schwäbisch Gmünd and End of War 1945 in the Schwäbisch Gmünd district also attracted special attention, as they were not only based on eyewitness reports, but also on official reports and trial files. The commemorative publication for the 800th anniversary of the city in 1962 comes partly from Deibeles.

In order to institutionalize local research, Deibele was one of the founders of the Federation for Local History in 1949 , from which the Gmünder Geschichtsverein e. V. emerged.

In September 2019, the discovery of his war chronicle from 1939 to 1945 by the Gmünder Stadtarchiv became known. It is part of his estate, which is in the city archives, and was published as a digital edition in 2020.

Honors

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Albert Deibele was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit (Cross of Merit on Ribbon) on April 2, 1959 because of his 20 years of activity as a voluntary city archivist . On his 80th birthday, Mayor Hansludwig Scheffold made him an honorary citizen of the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd on March 27, 1969, with the following reasons:

“In over 30 years of restless work, he has built up the city archive and turned it into a scientific institution. With his extensive publications he has made an excellent contribution to the research and presentation of the history of the city. "
